Abstract:
This study investigates the role of parental concern and teachers’ characteristics as determinants of social competence in children with hearing impairment attending primary schools. Social competence plays a crucial role in the overall development of children, including those with hearing impairments. Understanding the factors that influence social competence in this specific group of children can help inform interventions and support systems to enhance their social skills and overall well-being.

The study adopts a quantitative research approach and involves a sample of children with hearing impairment enrolled in primary schools. Parental concern is assessed through surveys and interviews to explore parental perceptions, expectations, and involvement in their child’s social development. Teachers’ characteristics are measured through surveys to examine factors such as experience, training, and attitudes towards inclusive education.

The findings of this study contribute to the existing literature by highlighting the importance of parental concern and teachers’ characteristics in shaping the social competence of children with hearing impairment. Positive parental concern, characterized by active involvement and supportive attitudes, can significantly impact a child’s social development. Similarly, teachers who possess relevant training, experience, and positive attitudes towards inclusive education can create an inclusive and supportive classroom environment that fosters social competence.

The implications of this study are twofold. Firstly, it emphasizes the need for parental involvement and support in the social development of children with hearing impairment. Parents can play a critical role in advocating for their child’s needs, fostering social interactions, and providing a supportive home environment. Secondly, it underscores the significance of teachers’ characteristics, highlighting the importance of specialized training in inclusive education and cultivating positive attitudes towards students with hearing impairment.

The findings of this study can inform educational policies and practices aimed at promoting social competence in children with hearing impairment. By recognizing the role of parental concern and teachers’ characteristics, educational institutions can develop targeted interventions, provide necessary resources, and establish collaborative partnerships between parents, teachers, and professionals to enhance the social well-being of children with hearing impairment in primary schools.
