Abstract:
The rapid proliferation of social media applications and the widespread adoption of mobile devices have had a profound impact on various aspects of society, including education. This study aims to investigate the relationship between media multitasking behavior, skill level in the use of social media applications, and mobile learning among students in tertiary institutions.
The study employed a quantitative research design and collected data from a sample of students enrolled in tertiary institutions. A structured questionnaire was used to collect information on participants’ media multitasking behavior, skill level in using social media applications, and their engagement in mobile learning activities. The collected data were analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques, including correlation and regression analysis.
Preliminary findings suggest that media multitasking behavior is prevalent among students, with a significant percentage of them engaging in simultaneous use of multiple media platforms. Additionally, the study revealed a positive association between skill level in the use of social media applications and mobile learning engagement. Students with higher skill levels in using social media applications were found to be more actively involved in mobile learning activities.
The implications of these findings are twofold. Firstly, the results highlight the need for educators and educational institutions to recognize and harness the potential of social media applications for mobile learning. By providing training and support to enhance students’ skill levels in using these applications, educators can facilitate more effective and engaging mobile learning experiences. Secondly, the findings emphasize the importance of understanding and managing media multitasking behavior among students. Educators should be aware of the potential distractions posed by media multitasking and develop strategies to promote focused and productive mobile learning behaviors.
This study contributes to the existing literature by shedding light on the relationship between media multitasking behavior, skill level in the use of social media applications, and mobile learning engagement among students in tertiary institutions. The findings provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and researchers interested in leveraging social media applications for educational purposes and optimizing mobile learning experiences in tertiary education settings.
