Abstract:

The present study aims to investigate the knowledge of pre-service chemistry teachers regarding green chemistry principles and examine the relationship between their attitudes towards environmental sustainability and their behavior in promoting sustainable practices. Green chemistry, also known as sustainable chemistry, is an emerging field that focuses on designing chemical processes and products that minimize environmental impact, conserve resources, and promote sustainability.

The study employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews, to gather data from a sample of pre-service chemistry teachers. The participants’ knowledge of green chemistry principles was assessed through a structured questionnaire, which covered key concepts and practices related to sustainable chemistry. Additionally, their attitudes towards environmental sustainability were evaluated using a validated scale, capturing their beliefs, values, and concerns about the environment.

The findings of the study revealed a significant gap in the knowledge of pre-service chemistry teachers regarding green chemistry principles. While some participants demonstrated a basic understanding of sustainable practices, others lacked awareness of key concepts such as the 12 principles of green chemistry. However, there was a positive correlation between knowledge level and attitude towards environmental sustainability, suggesting that greater awareness of green chemistry principles positively influenced participants’ attitudes.

Furthermore, the study explored the connection between attitudes and behavior towards environmental sustainability. The results indicated that pre-service chemistry teachers with more positive attitudes were more likely to engage in environmentally friendly behaviors, such as incorporating green chemistry principles into their teaching practices and promoting sustainable practices in laboratory settings. Conversely, participants with less favorable attitudes towards environmental sustainability were less inclined to adopt sustainable behaviors.

The implications of these findings underscore the importance of integrating green chemistry education into pre-service teacher training programs. By enhancing the knowledge and understanding of green chemistry principles among future chemistry teachers, educational institutions can foster a greater sense of responsibility and commitment towards environmental sustainability. This, in turn, can positively impact the promotion of sustainable practices in chemistry education and contribute to a more environmentally conscious society.
