Abstract:
This study investigates the relationship between teachers’ personality traits and students’ perception of careers in agriculture in Abia State, Nigeria. The perception of students towards agricultural careers plays a crucial role in shaping their educational and career choices. However, little research has been conducted to explore the potential influence of teachers’ personality traits on students’ perception of agriculture as a viable career option.

The study adopts a quantitative research design, utilizing a questionnaire survey to collect data from a sample of students in secondary schools in Abia State. The Big Five Personality traits model, which includes extraversion, agreeableness, conscientiousness, emotional stability, and openness to experience, is used to assess teachers’ personalities. Students’ perception of careers in agriculture is measured through a set of items designed to capture their attitudes, interests, and aspirations related to the agricultural field.

The data collected is analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis. The findings reveal the extent to which teachers’ personality traits are associated with students’ perception of careers in agriculture. The results also provide insights into specific personality traits that have a significant impact on students’ perception.

The implications of the study highlight the importance of teacher training and professional development programs focused on enhancing teachers’ personality traits that positively influence students’ perception of agricultural careers. By understanding the role of teachers’ personalities in shaping students’ perceptions, educational policymakers and stakeholders can design strategies to promote agricultural education and encourage students to consider careers in agriculture.

Overall, this study contributes to the existing literature by exploring the correlation between teachers’ personality traits and students’ perception of careers in agriculture. The findings can inform educational practices and interventions aimed at nurturing students’ interest and engagement in agricultural fields, thus fostering sustainable development in the agricultural sector of Abia State, Nigeria, and beyond.
