Abstract:
This paper provides an in-depth exploration of the role of faith, sex, and religion in relation to HIV/AIDS among tertiary education students in Lagos, Nigeria. HIV/AIDS remains a significant public health concern globally, and Nigeria has been identified as one of the countries with a high prevalence rate. Understanding the factors that influence HIV/AIDS transmission and prevention among tertiary education students is crucial for designing effective interventions.
The role of faith and religion in shaping attitudes, beliefs, and behaviors related to HIV/AIDS cannot be understated. Nigeria is a religiously diverse country, with Christianity and Islam being the predominant religions. Religious beliefs often influence individuals’ sexual practices and behaviors, and this can have implications for HIV/AIDS transmission. Factors such as abstinence-only education, stigmatization of condom use, and misconceptions about HIV/AIDS may be influenced by religious teachings and can contribute to higher infection rates.
Sexual behavior plays a significant role in HIV/AIDS transmission, particularly among young adults in tertiary institutions. Factors such as multiple sexual partners, inconsistent condom use, and engaging in risky sexual practices can increase the risk of acquiring HIV/AIDS.
