Abstract:

The rapid advancement of technology has significantly transformed the educational landscape, leading to the adoption of e-learning platforms in various academic institutions. This study aims to explore the awareness and perception of undergraduates at the University of Ilorin regarding the utilization of e-learning platforms for learning purposes.

The study employs a mixed-methods approach, combining both qualitative and quantitative research methods. A structured questionnaire was administered to a sample of undergraduate students from different faculties and departments at the University of Ilorin to collect quantitative data. Additionally, focus group discussions and interviews were conducted with selected participants to gather qualitative insights into their experiences and perceptions of e-learning platforms.

The findings reveal that the majority of undergraduate students at the University of Ilorin are aware of the existence of e-learning platforms and have utilized them for learning purposes. However, the level of awareness and usage varies among students from different faculties and departments. Factors such as access to internet connectivity, personal preferences, and technological proficiency influence the students’ perceptions and utilization of e-learning platforms.

Overall, the undergraduates’ perception of e-learning platforms is positive, with many acknowledging the convenience and flexibility that these platforms offer. However, some students express concerns regarding the effectiveness of e-learning compared to traditional classroom settings, highlighting issues such as limited interaction with instructors and peers, technical glitches, and a lack of hands-on practical experiences.

Based on these findings, it is recommended that the University of Ilorin continues to invest in improving the technological infrastructure and internet connectivity on campus to enhance the accessibility and usability of e-learning platforms. Additionally, faculty members need to receive adequate training and support to effectively integrate e-learning tools into their teaching practices and address the concerns raised by students.

This study contributes to the growing body of knowledge on e-learning utilization in higher education institutions, specifically focusing on the University of Ilorin. The findings can inform educational policymakers, administrators, and faculty members in developing strategies to optimize the integration of e-learning platforms into the curriculum, thereby enhancing the overall learning experience for undergraduate students.
