Abstract:
The Joint Universities Preliminary Examinations Board (JUPEB) programme in Nigeria is an alternative pathway for candidates seeking admission into Nigerian universities. This study aims to assess the perspectives and experiences of candidates who have participated in the JUPEB programme. The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather comprehensive data.
The quantitative phase involved the distribution of structured questionnaires to a sample of JUPEB candidates across different states in Nigeria. The survey captured information regarding the candidates’ motivations for enrolling in the JUPEB programme, their perceptions of the programme’s effectiveness in preparing them for university education, and their overall satisfaction with the experience.
In the qualitative phase, semi-structured interviews were conducted with a subset of participants to gain deeper insights into their experiences and to explore any challenges they encountered during the programme. The interviews also aimed to examine the candidates’ perceptions of the programme’s strengths and weaknesses, as well as their recommendations for improvement.
Preliminary findings from the study indicate that candidates enrolled in the JUPEB programme were primarily motivated by the desire to gain admission into universities and pursue their desired courses of study. The majority of participants expressed satisfaction with the programme’s curriculum, teaching methods, and academic support. However, some candidates highlighted challenges such as heavy workload, time constraints, and the need for more comprehensive career guidance.
This research contributes to the existing literature on alternative admission pathways and provides valuable insights into the JUPEB programme in Nigeria. The findings will inform educational policymakers, institutions, and stakeholders about the strengths and weaknesses of the programme, enabling them to make informed decisions and improvements. Future studies could explore the long-term outcomes and academic performance of JUPEB candidates after their transition to university education.
