Abstract:
The emergence of online learning platforms has significantly transformed the educational landscape, providing new opportunities for students to access education remotely. This study aims to identify the critical success factors that contribute to online learning engagement among undergraduates in Northwestern Nigerian universities.
The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection techniques. A survey questionnaire was distributed to a sample of undergraduate students from various universities in the Northwestern region of Nigeria, and semi-structured interviews were conducted to gain deeper insights into students’ experiences and perceptions of online learning engagement.
The findings reveal several critical success factors that significantly influence online learning engagement. Firstly, technological infrastructure and digital literacy skills play a crucial role in facilitating students’ ability to access and navigate online learning platforms effectively. Adequate access to reliable internet connectivity, functional devices, and proficiency in using digital tools are essential for students to actively engage in online learning.
Secondly, student motivation and self-regulation are key factors in determining online learning engagement. Intrinsic motivation, such as personal interest and curiosity, as well as extrinsic motivation, such as recognition and rewards, positively impact students’ engagement in online learning activities. Additionally, self-regulation skills, including time management, goal setting, and self-discipline, enable students to stay focused and complete online learning tasks effectively.
Furthermore, the role of instructional design and pedagogical strategies cannot be underestimated. Well-designed online courses that incorporate interactive and engaging content, multimedia resources, and collaborative learning opportunities enhance students’ motivation and active participation. Effective communication and feedback mechanisms between instructors and students also contribute to fostering a sense of connection and engagement in the online learning environment.
Lastly, social support and a sense of belonging are critical for students’ online learning engagement. Creating virtual communities, facilitating peer interaction, and providing opportunities for collaborative learning enable students to build relationships, share experiences, and support one another, enhancing their overall engagement in online learning.
The findings of this study provide valuable insights into the factors that contribute to successful online learning engagement among undergraduates in Northwestern Nigerian universities. These findings can inform educational institutions, policymakers, and instructors in designing and implementing effective online learning experiences that maximize student engagement and learning outcomes in the region.
