Abstract:

This study investigates the effects of employing an edutainment augmented instructional strategy on the performance and attitude of biology students in Abuja, Nigeria. The integration of entertainment and education, known as edutainment, has gained recognition as a promising approach to enhance student engagement and learning outcomes in various educational contexts.

The research employs a mixed-methods design, combining quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A sample of biology students from selected secondary schools in Abuja participates in the study. The experimental group receives instruction using the edutainment augmented instructional strategy, while the control group receives conventional instruction. Pre- and post-tests are administered to measure the students’ performance in biology, and a survey is conducted to assess their attitudes toward the subject.

The quantitative data collected are analyzed using statistical techniques, such as t-tests and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), to determine the differences in performance between the experimental and control groups. Additionally, descriptive statistics are used to analyze the survey data, providing insights into the students’ attitudes toward biology.

The results of this study contribute to the existing literature on instructional strategies by exploring the potential benefits of edutainment augmented instruction in the Nigerian context. It is anticipated that the integration of entertainment elements into biology instruction will enhance student engagement, motivation, and knowledge retention, ultimately leading to improved academic performance. Furthermore, the study aims to shed light on students’ attitudes toward biology and how the edutainment approach influences their perceptions of the subject.

The findings of this study have implications for educational policymakers, curriculum developers, and educators in Abuja, Nigeria, and beyond. By demonstrating the positive impact of edutainment augmented instruction, the study highlights the value of incorporating innovative instructional strategies that promote active learning and student-centered approaches.

Keywords: edutainment, augmented instruction, biology education, student performance, attitude, Abuja, Nigeria.
