Abstract:
This study investigates the effectiveness of a scenario-based learning strategy in enhancing students’ attitudes toward basic science in Lagos, Nigeria. The attitude of students towards science plays a crucial role in their motivation and engagement, ultimately impacting their academic performance and career choices. However, there is a prevailing challenge of disinterest and negative attitudes towards basic science among students in Nigeria.

The study employs a quasi-experimental research design, involving a sample of secondary school students from selected schools in Lagos. The experimental group is exposed to a scenario-based learning strategy, while the control group receives traditional instruction. Pre- and post-intervention surveys are conducted to measure students’ attitudes towards basic science, including their perception of its relevance, interest, and value.

The findings suggest that the implementation of scenario-based learning significantly improves students’ attitudes towards basic science. Students in the experimental group exhibit greater interest, perceive higher relevance, and demonstrate an enhanced understanding of the practical applications of basic science concepts. Moreover, the study highlights the positive influence of scenario-based learning on students’ motivation, critical thinking skills, and problem-solving abilities.

The implications of this research are significant in the Nigerian educational context, where there is a need to promote positive attitudes towards basic science. By incorporating scenario-based learning strategies into the curriculum, educators can create immersive and engaging learning experiences that align with real-world applications of scientific principles. This approach not only enhances students’ attitudes but also fosters a deeper understanding and appreciation of basic science concepts.

To promote the widespread adoption of scenario-based learning, the study recommends comprehensive teacher training programs and the development of supportive learning materials. Additionally, further research is encouraged to explore the long-term effects of scenario-based learning on students’ academic achievements and career aspirations in the field of science.

In conclusion, the study provides empirical evidence supporting the effectiveness of scenario-based learning in enhancing students’ attitudes towards basic science in Lagos, Nigeria. By capitalizing on the immersive and practical aspects of scenario-based learning, educators can inspire interest, motivation, and positive attitudes among students, ultimately fostering a generation of scientifically literate individuals capable of addressing real-world challenges.
