Abstract:
This abstract provides a concise overview of a study investigating the perception of mathematics teachers towards achieving the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) in Kano State, Nigeria. The Sustainable Development Goals, adopted by the United Nations, provide a framework for addressing global challenges, including poverty, inequality, and environmental sustainability. Mathematics education plays a crucial role in equipping students with the skills and knowledge necessary to contribute to the attainment of these goals.

The study aimed to explore the perceptions of mathematics teachers in Kano State regarding the relevance, challenges, and opportunities associated with integrating the SDGs into mathematics education. A qualitative research design was employed, utilizing semi-structured interviews and focus group discussions to gather data from a purposive sample of mathematics teachers in Kano State.

Preliminary findings from the study indicate that mathematics teachers generally recognize the importance of integrating the SDGs into their teaching practices. They perceive the SDGs as a means to foster critical thinking, problem-solving, and global citizenship among students. However, several challenges were identified, including a lack of awareness and training on the SDGs, limited instructional materials and resources, and the need for curriculum alignment.

Despite these challenges, mathematics teachers also highlighted various opportunities for promoting the SDGs in their classrooms. These opportunities include the incorporation of real-world applications of mathematics, collaborative learning, and community engagement. Additionally, teachers expressed a desire for professional development programs and support from educational authorities to enhance their capacity to integrate the SDGs effectively.

The study’s findings contribute to the understanding of the perceptions of mathematics teachers towards achieving the SDGs in Kano State, Nigeria. The identified challenges and opportunities can inform policymakers, curriculum developers, and teacher training institutions in designing strategies to facilitate the integration of the SDGs into mathematics education. By addressing these challenges and capitalizing on the opportunities, Kano State can enhance mathematics education’s contribution to the attainment of sustainable development goals.
