Abstract:
As technology continues to advance, the integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in educational settings has become increasingly important. This study examines the competencies of pre-service teachers and their utilization of ICT in mathematics instruction. The purpose of this research is to explore the relationship between pre-service teachers’ competencies and their effective use of ICT tools to enhance mathematics teaching and learning.

The study adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative survey data and qualitative interviews. A sample of pre-service teachers enrolled in mathematics education programs is selected from several teacher training institutions. The participants’ competencies in ICT are assessed through a self-report questionnaire, focusing on their knowledge, skills, and confidence in utilizing various ICT tools and software related to mathematics instruction.

The findings reveal that pre-service teachers demonstrate a moderate level of overall ICT competencies, with variations observed across different areas of ICT utilization. The results suggest that pre-service teachers exhibit higher competencies in basic computer skills and general software usage compared to subject-specific ICT tools for mathematics. Furthermore, the study identifies several factors influencing the pre-service teachers’ competencies, including prior exposure to ICT, training opportunities, and perceived relevance of ICT in mathematics instruction.

Regarding the use of ICT in mathematics instruction, the study highlights both the opportunities and challenges faced by pre-service teachers. The findings indicate that pre-service teachers recognize the potential of ICT to enhance student engagement, facilitate problem-solving, and provide access to a wide range of learning resources. However, they face barriers such as limited access to technology, time constraints, and lack of pedagogical knowledge for integrating ICT effectively.

The implications of the study suggest the need for comprehensive ICT training programs within pre-service teacher education to enhance future teachers’ competencies and confidence in utilizing ICT tools for mathematics instruction. The findings also emphasize the importance of providing sufficient support and resources to address the challenges faced by pre-service teachers when integrating ICT in the classroom.

Overall, this study contributes to the existing literature by providing insights into the competencies of pre-service teachers in utilizing ICT for mathematics instruction. The findings inform teacher education programs and policymakers in developing effective strategies to prepare pre-service teachers for the digital age, ultimately promoting enhanced mathematics teaching and learning outcomes in contemporary educational contexts.
