Abstract:
Wood workshop facilities play a crucial role in technical education, providing practical training opportunities for students in woodworking trades. Effective management of these facilities is vital to ensure a conducive learning environment and promote quality teaching and learning outcomes. This study aims to assess the wood workshop facilities management practices in Technical Colleges of Lagos State, Nigeria, and their impact on teaching and learning effectiveness.

The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The sample consists of technical college administrators, woodworking instructors, and students. The quantitative survey collects data on the current state of wood workshop facilities, including availability, adequacy, functionality, safety measures, and maintenance practices. The qualitative interviews explore stakeholders’ perspectives on the challenges faced in managing wood workshop facilities and the potential strategies for improvement.

Preliminary findings reveal several areas for improvement in wood workshop facilities management practices. The study identifies challenges such as inadequate funding, lack of skilled personnel, outdated equipment, insufficient safety measures, and poor maintenance. These challenges have resulted in suboptimal learning environments, hindering effective teaching and learning outcomes.

The study recommends various strategies to enhance wood workshop facilities management for effective teaching and learning. These include increasing budgetary allocations for facility upgrades and maintenance, providing professional development opportunities for instructors, modernizing equipment and tools, implementing stringent safety protocols, and establishing a systematic maintenance schedule. Furthermore, the study emphasizes the importance of collaboration between educational authorities, industry stakeholders, and technical colleges to address the identified challenges and foster sustainable improvements.

The findings of this research contribute to the existing body of knowledge on wood workshop facilities management in technical education. The study’s recommendations can assist policymakers, administrators, and educators in developing effective strategies to enhance the teaching and learning environment in wood workshop facilities. Ultimately, the improved management practices will lead to better educational outcomes, increased student engagement, and the development of skilled woodworking professionals in Lagos State, Nigeria.
