Abstract:

The COVID-19 pandemic has had a profound impact on education systems worldwide, forcing educational institutions to adopt alternative modes of teaching and learning. In Nigeria, like many other countries, the closure of schools and the implementation of lockdown measures have led to the widespread adoption of homeschooling as a means to continue education remotely. This abstract aims to explore the attitudes of pre-tertiary students in Nigeria towards mathematics homeschooling during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The study utilized a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data on students’ attitudes towards mathematics homeschooling. A sample of pre-tertiary students from various regions of Nigeria was selected using a purposive sampling technique. The quantitative survey assessed students’ perceptions of mathematics homeschooling, including their motivation, engagement, and perceived learning outcomes. The qualitative interviews delved deeper into students’ experiences, challenges, and suggestions regarding mathematics homeschooling.

Preliminary findings suggest that the attitudes of pre-tertiary students towards mathematics homeschooling during the COVID-19 pandemic in Nigeria are influenced by various factors. While some students expressed positive attitudes, citing increased flexibility and personalized learning experiences, others reported challenges related to technological barriers, lack of teacher support, and difficulties in self-regulated learning. Additionally, students’ prior attitudes towards mathematics, their home environment, and parental involvement emerged as influential factors in shaping their perceptions of mathematics homeschooling.

The study highlights the need for tailored interventions and support systems to enhance mathematics homeschooling experiences for pre-tertiary students in Nigeria. This includes providing access to appropriate technological resources, promoting teacher-student interactions through online platforms, and offering professional development opportunities for parents to facilitate effective homeschooling practices. Furthermore, addressing students’ motivational factors, such as fostering a positive attitude towards mathematics, can contribute to improved engagement and learning outcomes in the homeschooling context.

The findings from this study have implications for policymakers, educators, and parents in Nigeria and other similar contexts. Understanding the attitudes of pre-tertiary students towards mathematics homeschooling during the COVID-19 pandemic can inform the development of effective strategies to ensure quality education and student well-being in times of crisis.
