IMPACT OF SOCIALIZATION AGENTS ON BEHAVIOURAL MODIFICATION OF FEMALE BASIC SCHOOL PUPILS IN ILORIN METROPOLIS, KWARA STATE, NIGERIA 

Abstract:

The socialization process plays a critical role in shaping an individual’s behavior and identity. This study aims to explore the impact of socialization agents on behavioral modification among female basic school pupils in Ilorin Metropolis, Kwara State, Nigeria. The study focuses on understanding the influences of various socialization agents, including family, peers, school, and media, on the behavior of female pupils within the educational context.

A mixed-methods approach was employed, combining both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The sample comprised female pupils from basic schools in Ilorin Metropolis, selected through a stratified random sampling technique. Data were collected through surveys, interviews, and observations.

The findings reveal that socialization agents significantly influence the behavioral modification of female basic school pupils in Ilorin Metropolis. The family emerged as the primary socialization agent, with parents playing a crucial role in shaping their daughters’ behavior. Parental values, attitudes, and parenting styles were found to significantly impact the pupils’ behavior.

Peers also exerted a notable influence on behavioral modification. Peer pressure, social norms, and the desire for acceptance were identified as key factors affecting the behavior of female pupils. Additionally, the school environment, including teachers’ expectations, disciplinary practices, and academic performance, played a significant role in shaping their behavior.

Furthermore, the media, particularly television and social media, were found to have a considerable impact on the behavior of female pupils. Exposure to media content, such as gender stereotypes, body image ideals, and lifestyle choices, influenced their behavioral patterns.

The study underscores the importance of recognizing the role of socialization agents in shaping the behavior of female basic school pupils. It highlights the need for collaborative efforts between families, schools, and the media to promote positive behavioral modification among female pupils. The findings provide valuable insights for educators, policymakers, and parents to develop strategies that foster a conducive socialization environment for female pupils, ensuring their holistic development.
