Abstract:
This abstract provides a brief overview of a study conducted on the relationship between parental involvement and achievement motivation among undergraduates at the University of Ilorin. The study aimed to investigate how parental involvement in a student’s academic life influences their motivation to achieve academic success.
The research employed a quantitative approach, utilizing a survey questionnaire as the primary data collection tool. The sample consisted of 200 undergraduate students from various faculties and academic disciplines within the University of Ilorin. The questionnaire included items related to parental involvement, achievement motivation, and demographic information.
The findings of the study revealed a positive correlation between parental involvement and achievement motivation among undergraduates. Students who reported higher levels of parental involvement exhibited higher levels of motivation to achieve academic success. Furthermore, the study identified specific forms of parental involvement, such as monitoring academic progress, providing emotional support, and engaging in educational discussions, as significant predictors of achievement motivation.
The implications of the study suggest that parental involvement plays a crucial role in shaping undergraduates’ motivation to succeed academically. These findings highlight the importance of fostering a supportive and engaging environment at home, where parents actively participate in their children’s educational journey. Universities and educational institutions can also benefit from these findings by promoting parental involvement programs and initiatives to enhance students’ achievement motivation.
It is recommended that future research explores the impact of cultural and contextual factors on parental involvement and achievement motivation among undergraduates in different Nigerian universities. Additionally, qualitative studies can provide deeper insights into the subjective experiences and perceptions of both students and parents regarding the influence of parental involvement on achievement motivation.
Overall, this study contributes to the existing literature on parental involvement and achievement motivation among undergraduates, presenting valuable insights for educators, parents, and policymakers interested in enhancing student success and academic outcomes in the University of Ilorin and similar educational settings.
