Title: Social Media Utilization Among Undergraduates in the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria: An Abstract

Abstract:
This abstract provides a summary of a study conducted to investigate the utilization of social media among undergraduate students at the University of Ilorin, Ilorin, Nigeria. The study aimed to explore the frequency of social media use, popular platforms among students, the purposes for which social media is used, and its impact on academic and social life.

A mixed-methods research approach was employed, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. A survey questionnaire was distributed among a sample of undergraduate students, and semi-structured interviews were conducted with a subset of participants to gain deeper insights into their experiences and perceptions.

The findings revealed that social media usage among undergraduate students in the University of Ilorin is pervasive, with a high frequency of engagement. The most popular social media platforms reported by the participants were WhatsApp, Facebook, Instagram, and Twitter. The primary purposes for using social media included communication with friends and family, academic discussions, entertainment, and information sharing.

The study also highlighted both positive and negative impacts of social media utilization. Positive impacts included enhanced communication and networking opportunities, access to educational resources, and social support. However, negative impacts such as time wastage, distraction from academic activities, and exposure to cyberbullying and misinformation were also identified.

The implications of the study underscore the need for promoting digital literacy and responsible social media usage among undergraduate students. Educational institutions should consider integrating social media into the curriculum to leverage its potential benefits while mitigating its negative effects. Moreover, awareness campaigns should be conducted to educate students about the potential risks and strategies for managing their social media use effectively.

In conclusion, social media plays a significant role in the lives of undergraduate students at the University of Ilorin, serving as a platform for communication, information sharing, and entertainment. While social media offers numerous benefits, it is crucial to address the associated challenges and develop strategies to ensure responsible usage among students.
