Abstract:
This study examines the relationship between study habits and academic achievement among secondary school students in Oyo State. Study habits play a crucial role in determining the success or failure of students in their academic pursuits. Understanding the relationship between study habits and academic achievement is essential for educators, policymakers, and parents to develop effective strategies to enhance students’ learning outcomes.
The study adopts a quantitative research design and utilizes a sample of secondary school students from multiple schools in Oyo State. A structured questionnaire is used to collect data on study habits, including variables such as time management, note-taking, organization, and self-discipline. Academic achievement is measured using students’ grade point average (GPA) obtained from their school records.
The data collected is analyzed using statistical techniques, including correlation analysis and multiple regression analysis, to determine the relationship between study habits and academic achievement. The findings of the study provide valuable insights into the specific study habits that significantly impact students’ academic performance.
The results indicate a positive correlation between effective study habits and academic achievement. Students who demonstrate good study habits, such as effective time management, regular note-taking, and organization, tend to achieve higher academic success. Furthermore, self-discipline emerges as a critical factor influencing academic achievement.
The study suggests that educators, parents, and policymakers should focus on promoting and fostering positive study habits among secondary school students. Strategies such as providing study skills training, creating conducive study environments, and encouraging self-discipline are recommended to enhance students’ academic performance.
The findings of this study contribute to the existing body of research on study habits and academic achievement. By identifying the specific study habits that positively impact students’ academic success, this research provides practical implications for educational interventions aimed at improving students’ learning outcomes.
