Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the effects of implementing a place-based learning strategy on social studies pre-service teachers’ environmental knowledge, attitudes, and responsible behavior in colleges of education. The focus of the study is to explore the potential of using real-world environmental contexts as learning resources to enhance teacher education in the field of social studies.
The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative measures of environmental knowledge, attitudes, and responsible behavior with qualitative data obtained through interviews and observations. The study involves pre-service teachers enrolled in social studies education programs in multiple colleges of education.
The intervention consists of integrating place-based learning activities into the existing curriculum, where pre-service teachers engage in authentic experiences related to the natural and built environment. These experiences include field trips, outdoor investigations, and community engagement projects. The aim is to provide opportunities for pre-service teachers to connect their learning to real-world contexts and develop a deeper understanding of environmental issues.
Quantitative data is collected through pre and post-tests to assess changes in environmental knowledge, attitudes, and responsible behavior. The qualitative data is gathered through semi-structured interviews and classroom observations to gain insights into the pre-service teachers’ experiences, perceptions, and reflections on the place-based learning activities.
The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on place-based learning and teacher education. It is expected that pre-service teachers who participate in the place-based learning intervention will demonstrate higher levels of environmental knowledge, more positive attitudes towards the environment, and an increased sense of responsibility towards sustainable practices.
The implications of this study are significant for teacher educators and policymakers. By incorporating place-based learning strategies into social studies education programs, colleges of education can foster environmentally literate and responsible teachers who can effectively integrate environmental education into their future classrooms. This research also emphasizes the importance of hands-on, experiential learning approaches in teacher education to address critical environmental challenges.
Keywords: Place-based learning, social studies education, environmental knowledge, attitudes, responsible behavior, pre-service teachers, teacher education.
