Abstract:
The integration of Information and Communication Technology (ICT) in education has become increasingly important in preparing pre-service teachers for the modern classroom. This study investigates the influence of ownership on the level of ICT needs among pre-service teachers in Colleges of Education in the North Central region of Nigeria. The ownership of Colleges of Education, whether they are government-owned or privately-owned, can potentially impact the availability and utilization of ICT resources and infrastructure.

A mixed-methods research design was employed, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. The participants in this study were pre-service teachers enrolled in Colleges of Education in the North Central region of Nigeria. The quantitative data were collected through a structured questionnaire, while the qualitative data were gathered through semi-structured interviews with a subset of the participants.

The findings of the study revealed that ownership of the Colleges of Education significantly influenced the level of ICT needs among pre-service teachers. Government-owned institutions were found to have greater access to ICT resources and infrastructure, including computer labs, internet connectivity, and educational software. They also demonstrated a higher level of ICT integration in their curriculum compared to privately-owned institutions. In contrast, privately-owned institutions faced challenges in providing adequate ICT facilities and encountered limitations in the availability of financial resources.

Furthermore, the study identified that pre-service teachers in government-owned institutions had higher levels of ICT competency and were more confident in their ability to use ICT tools for teaching and learning. Conversely, pre-service teachers in privately-owned institutions expressed a greater need for ICT training and professional development opportunities.

These findings highlight the importance of ownership in shaping the ICT needs of pre-service teachers in Colleges of Education. It is recommended that policymakers and educational stakeholders take into consideration the ownership status of institutions when developing strategies to enhance ICT integration in teacher education programs. Efforts should be made to provide adequate ICT resources and infrastructure in all institutions, especially in privately-owned colleges, to ensure equitable access to technology-enhanced teaching and learning experiences.
