Abstract:
The integration of technology in education has revolutionized the way teaching and learning take place. One such technological advancement is the Learning Management System (LMS), which provides a platform for delivering course materials, facilitating interaction, and assessing students’ progress. This study aims to explore the receptiveness and challenges faced by Social Studies undergraduates in Kwara State when using the Learning Management System.
The research followed a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative and quantitative data collection methods. A questionnaire was administered to a representative sample of Social Studies undergraduates in various universities across Kwara State. Additionally, focus group discussions and interviews were conducted to gather in-depth insights into the students’ experiences and perceptions regarding the use of LMS.
Preliminary findings indicate that the majority of Social Studies undergraduates in Kwara State were receptive to the use of Learning Management Systems. They recognized the potential benefits of LMS in terms of convenience, accessibility to learning materials, and enhanced interaction with instructors and peers. The students appreciated the ability to access course resources at any time, from anywhere, which facilitated self-paced learning and improved their overall academic experience.
However, several challenges were identified that hindered the effective use of the LMS among Social Studies undergraduates. Technical issues such as poor internet connectivity, limited access to personal devices, and unfamiliarity with the LMS interface were reported as significant barriers. Additionally, some students expressed concerns about the lack of face-to-face interaction and personalized feedback, which they perceived as crucial for an enriched learning experience in Social Studies.
The findings of this study have implications for policymakers, educators, and LMS providers. To enhance the receptiveness and effective utilization of LMS among Social Studies undergraduates in Kwara State, it is crucial to address the identified challenges. This can be achieved through interventions such as improving internet infrastructure, providing access to devices, offering training and support on LMS usage, and exploring alternative strategies to foster meaningful interaction and feedback within the online learning environment.
