ABSTRACT

This research project aims to investigate the extent to which innovative teaching strategies are required in business education programmes in the 21st century in tertiary institutions in Abia State, Nigeria. The rapid advancements in technology and changes in the global business landscape necessitate the adoption of innovative teaching methods to equip students with relevant skills and knowledge. This study seeks to assess the extent to which innovative teaching strategies are being implemented in business education programmes in Abia State. Additionally, the research aims to identify the types of innovative teaching strategies used, the challenges faced in their implementation, and propose recommendations for enhancing the use of innovative teaching approaches. utilizing surveys, interviews, and classroom observations to collect data from business education teachers, administrators, students, and relevant stakeholders in selected tertiary institutions in Abia State. The research objectives include assessing the extent of implementation of innovative teaching strategies, identifying the types of strategies used, exploring the challenges encountered in their implementation, and proposing recommendations for enhancing their use.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the extent of implementation of innovative teaching strategies in business education programmes in Abia State. The research will assess the adoption and utilization of various innovative teaching strategies, such as project-based learning, flipped classrooms, case studies, collaborative learning, experiential learning, and the integration of technology in teaching and learning. It will examine the extent to which these strategies are effectively incorporated into the curriculum, their alignment with industry needs and global trends, and their impact on students’ learning outcomes and employability. Additionally, the study will identify the challenges faced in implementing innovative teaching strategies, including limited resources, resistance to change, inadequate faculty training, and institutional barriers. Furthermore, the research will propose recommendations for enhancing the use of innovative teaching strategies, such as investing in faculty development programs, creating supportive learning environments, fostering collaborations with industry partners, and integrating technology into instructional practices.

The implications of this research extend to business education teachers, administrators, policymakers, and educational stakeholders in Abia State. The findings will provide educators and administrators with insights into the current extent of implementation of innovative teaching strategies, enabling them to identify gaps and advocate for the integration of effective teaching approaches. Policymakers can utilize the research findings to inform policies and initiatives that support the adoption of innovative teaching strategies in business education programmes. Educational stakeholders, including training institutions, professional associations, and industry partners, can benefit from the research findings by gaining an understanding of the specific challenges and recommendations for enhancing the use of innovative teaching approaches
