Abstract:
The aim of this study was to examine the relationship between family climate and students’ academic achievement in social studies curriculum education in Ebonyi State, Nigeria. The study recognized the critical role that the family environment plays in shaping students’ educational outcomes and sought to explore how various aspects of the family climate may influence academic achievement in the specific context of social studies curriculum education.

The research employed a quantitative research design, utilizing a survey questionnaire to collect data from a sample of students in selected secondary schools in Ebonyi State. The Family Climate Scale (FCS) was used to measure the family climate, while students’ academic achievement was assessed using their cumulative grade point average (CGPA) in social studies. The data collected were analyzed using descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and multiple regression analysis.

The findings of the study revealed that there was a significant positive correlation between family climate and students’ academic achievement in social studies curriculum education. Specifically, aspects of the family climate such as parental involvement, socioemotional support, and academic expectations were found to be positively associated with students’ academic achievement. Moreover, the results of the multiple regression analysis indicated that family climate variables significantly predicted students’ academic achievement in social studies, even after controlling for other factors such as socio-economic status and students’ prior academic performance.

These findings suggest that the family climate plays a crucial role in students’ academic achievement in social studies curriculum education. Thus, it is crucial for educators, policymakers, and parents to recognize the importance of fostering a positive family climate that promotes parental involvement, socioemotional support, and high academic expectations. By creating a supportive and conducive family environment, students are more likely to thrive academically and achieve better educational outcomes.

Based on the study’s findings, recommendations are made for educational stakeholders to develop and implement programs that enhance parental involvement in students’ education, provide socioemotional support to students, and promote high academic expectations within the family setting. Further research is also encouraged to explore additional factors that may influence the relationship between family climate and students’ academic achievement in social studies curriculum education.
