Abstract:
This study presents a comparative analysis of principals’ school plant utilization and maintenance practices in public and private secondary schools in Enugu State. The effective utilization and maintenance of school facilities are crucial for providing a conducive learning environment and ensuring optimal educational outcomes.
The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from principals, teachers, and students in both public and private secondary schools. A total of 10 public and 10 private secondary schools were selected as the sample for the study.
The quantitative survey utilized a structured questionnaire to collect data on various aspects of school plant utilization and maintenance, including infrastructure availability, adequacy, functionality, and cleanliness. The qualitative interviews were conducted with selected principals to gather in-depth insights into their strategies, challenges, and best practices in managing and maintaining school facilities.
The findings revealed significant differences in school plant utilization and maintenance practices between public and private secondary schools in Enugu State. Private schools generally exhibited better infrastructure availability, adequacy, and functionality compared to public schools. Private school principals also reported higher levels of investment in maintenance and more proactive approaches to addressing facility issues. In contrast, public school principals faced numerous challenges, including inadequate funding, bureaucratic processes, and delayed repairs, which hindered effective utilization and maintenance of school facilities.
The study highlights the need for policymakers and educational stakeholders to address the disparities in school plant utilization and maintenance between public and private secondary schools. Recommendations include increasing funding for public schools, streamlining bureaucratic processes, and providing training and support for principals and staff in maintenance practices.
Overall, this research contributes to the existing body of knowledge on school plant management by providing insights into the comparative analysis of principals’ practices in public and private secondary schools. The findings can inform policy decisions aimed at improving the utilization and maintenance of school facilities, ultimately enhancing the learning environment for students in Enugu State.
