Abstract:
This abstract provides a summary of the challenges faced in teaching poetry in senior secondary education in the Onueke Education Zone of Ebonyi State, as well as the strategies employed to foster the development of students’ poetic skills. The study aims to shed light on the specific obstacles encountered by teachers and propose effective instructional techniques to enhance poetry education.
The research employed a mixed-methods approach, combining qualitative interviews and quantitative surveys. Data were collected from a sample of senior secondary school teachers specializing in English language and literature. The study identified several challenges in poetry teaching, including students’ limited exposure to poetry, difficulties in understanding poetic devices, lack of interest and motivation, and inadequate instructional resources.
To address these challenges and foster students’ development in poetry, the study proposes various developmental strategies. These strategies include incorporating multimodal teaching techniques, such as audio-visual aids, to enhance students’ comprehension and appreciation of poetry. Additionally, encouraging active student participation through interactive discussions, group activities, and performances can help stimulate their interest and engagement.
Furthermore, providing professional development opportunities for teachers in the form of workshops, seminars, and peer collaboration can equip them with effective instructional methods and resources. Integrating technology into poetry teaching, such as utilizing educational applications and online platforms, can also enhance students’ accessibility to diverse poetic works and facilitate interactive learning experiences.
The findings of this study have significant implications for poetry education in senior secondary schools in the Onueke Education Zone of Ebonyi State. By acknowledging the challenges faced by teachers and implementing the proposed strategies, educational stakeholders can foster a conducive learning environment that nurtures students’ appreciation for poetry and enhances their poetic skills.
