PROVISION AND UTILISATION OF FACILITIES AND PUBLIC SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN LAGOS STATE EDUCATION DISTRICT

Abstract:
This abstract provides a summary of a study conducted to investigate the relationship between the provision and utilization of facilities and the academic achievement of public senior secondary school students in the Lagos State Education District. The study aimed to assess the impact of available facilities on students’ academic performance and identify any gaps in their utilization that may hinder achievement.

The research design employed in this study was a quantitative approach using a descriptive survey design. A representative sample of public senior secondary schools within the Lagos State Education District was selected, and data was collected through questionnaires administered to teachers and students. The questionnaires focused on gathering information about the provision and utilization of facilities such as classrooms, libraries, laboratories, computer rooms, and sports facilities.

The findings of the study revealed that while the Lagos State Education District had made efforts to provide facilities in public senior secondary schools, there were significant disparities in their availability and utilization across schools. Some schools were well-equipped with modern facilities, while others lacked basic amenities that are crucial for effective teaching and learning. The study also found that the utilization of existing facilities varied among schools due to factors such as overcrowding, inadequate maintenance, and lack of proper management.

Furthermore, the study established a positive correlation between the provision and utilization of facilities and students’ academic achievement. Schools with better facilities and effective utilization practices tended to have higher academic performance compared to those with limited resources or poor utilization strategies.

Based on the findings, it is recommended that the Lagos State Education District take steps to address the disparities in facility provision across schools. This includes prioritizing resource allocation to schools in need, enhancing maintenance efforts, and promoting effective utilization practices through teacher training and administrative support. Additionally, policy interventions should be implemented to ensure equitable access to quality facilities for all public senior secondary school students in the district.

This study contributes to the existing body of knowledge by shedding light on the critical role of facilities and their utilization in determining students’ academic achievement. It highlights the need for policymakers, education administrators, and school stakeholders to recognize the significance of adequate and well-utilized facilities in fostering a conducive learning environment that supports student success.
