AN EVALUATION OF THE REFORMS IN UNIVERSAL BASIC EDUCATION IN NIGERIA

Abstract:
This abstract provides an overview of a comprehensive evaluation of the reforms implemented in Universal Basic Education (UBE) in Nigeria. The study aims to assess the effectiveness and impact of the reforms introduced to improve access, quality, and equity in basic education across the country. By examining the key components of the UBE program, including policy changes, curriculum development, teacher training, infrastructure enhancement, and community engagement, the evaluation seeks to identify strengths, weaknesses, and areas for further improvement within the Nigerian education system.

The evaluation adopts a mixed-methods research design, incorporating both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. Quantitative data will be obtained through structured surveys administered to a representative sample of students, teachers, parents, and education administrators across different states in Nigeria. The surveys will assess various indicators such as enrollment rates, dropout rates, academic performance, teacher qualifications, and infrastructure availability. Additionally, qualitative data will be collected through focus group discussions, interviews, and case studies to gain in-depth insights into the experiences, perceptions, and challenges faced by stakeholders.

The evaluation will employ both descriptive and inferential statistical analyses to interpret the quantitative data, while thematic analysis techniques will be employed to analyze the qualitative data. The findings will be organized around key evaluation criteria, including access to education, quality of teaching and learning, equity in educational opportunities, and community involvement. The evaluation will also consider the alignment of the UBE reforms with national and international educational goals and examine the sustainability and scalability of the implemented interventions.

The anticipated outcomes of this evaluation include evidence-based insights into the successes and shortcomings of the UBE reforms in Nigeria. The findings will inform policymakers, education practitioners, and stakeholders on the effectiveness of the current initiatives and provide recommendations for policy adjustments and future interventions. Ultimately, the evaluation aims to contribute to the ongoing efforts to enhance the quality of basic education, reduce educational disparities, and promote inclusive and equitable education for all Nigerian children.
