ASSESSMENT OF GRAMMATICAL CATEGORIES IN ERRORS IN THE ENGLISH SPEECH OF IGBO-ENGLISH BILINGUALS IN ENUGU URBAN
Abstract:
This study examines the grammatical errors made by Igbo-English bilingual speakers in Enugu Urban when speaking English. The aim is to assess the specific grammatical categories in which these errors occur and provide insights into the underlying factors contributing to these errors.
The study adopts a descriptive research design, utilizing both qualitative and quantitative methods. Data was collected through audio recordings of spontaneous conversations and interviews with Igbo-English bilingual speakers residing in Enugu Urban. The recordings were transcribed and analyzed to identify grammatical errors across various categories.
The analysis focuses on grammatical categories such as verb tense and aspect, subject-verb agreement, word order, articles, prepositions, and pronouns. The errors are categorized based on their frequency and type, and patterns of errors within each category are examined.
Preliminary findings indicate that Igbo-English bilingual speakers in Enugu Urban face challenges in mastering specific grammatical categories in English. Common errors include inconsistencies in verb tense and aspect usage, subject-verb agreement violations, incorrect word order, misuse of articles, preposition errors, and pronoun confusion.
Several factors contribute to these errors, including language interference from Igbo, limited exposure to native English speakers, inadequate formal English education, and sociolinguistic factors. The influence of Igbo language structures and cultural norms on English speech patterns is also evident.
This study contributes to the growing body of research on language acquisition and bilingualism, specifically focusing on the English speech of Igbo-English bilinguals. The findings have implications for language teaching and learning, curriculum development, and language policy in multilingual contexts.
Further research is recommended to explore additional factors influencing grammatical errors, investigate the impact of language proficiency levels on error patterns, and propose pedagogical strategies to address these challenges effectively.
