PRINCIPALS’ COMMUNICATION SKILLS AS PREDICTORS OF EFFECTIVE LEADERSHIP IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN RIVERS STATE
Abstract:
Effective leadership in secondary schools plays a crucial role in promoting educational excellence and student achievement. Among the various skills required for effective leadership, communication skills are particularly vital for principals to effectively interact with staff, students, parents, and stakeholders. This study aims to investigate the role of principals’ communication skills as predictors of effective leadership in secondary schools in Rivers State.
The study adopts a quantitative research design, utilizing a survey questionnaire to collect data from principals, teachers, and other school staff members in a sample of secondary schools in Rivers State. The questionnaire assesses principals’ communication skills and their leadership effectiveness as perceived by teachers and staff members.
The findings of this study contribute to the existing body of knowledge by exploring the relationship between principals’ communication skills and their effectiveness as leaders in secondary schools. Specifically, the study examines how communication skills, including verbal and non-verbal communication, active listening, clarity of message, and interpersonal skills, influence leadership effectiveness.
The data analysis will involve descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and regression analysis to determine the predictive relationship between principals’ communication skills and effective leadership. The study intends to provide insights into the specific communication skills that are most strongly associated with effective leadership in secondary schools.
The implications of this research are significant for educational policymakers, school administrators, and principals in Rivers State. By identifying the communication skills that are essential for effective leadership, this study can inform the development of targeted training programs and interventions to enhance principals’ communication abilities, thereby improving overall leadership effectiveness in secondary schools.
