EFFECT OF INTERACTIVE JIG-SAW TEACHING METHOD ON SENIOR SECONDARY SCHOOL STUDENTS’ ACADEMIC ACHIEVEMENT IN QUADRATIC EQUATION

Abstract:
This study investigates the effect of the interactive jigsaw teaching method on the academic achievement of senior secondary school students in quadratic equations. Quadratic equations pose a challenge for many students due to their abstract nature and complex problem-solving requirements. To address this issue, the interactive jigsaw teaching method is introduced as an innovative approach to enhance students’ understanding and performance in quadratic equations.

The study employs a quasi-experimental design involving two groups: the experimental group taught using the interactive jigsaw teaching method and the control group taught using traditional instructional methods. The sample consists of senior secondary school students from a selected educational institution. Pre-test and post-test measures are used to assess students’ academic achievement in quadratic equations.

During the intervention, the experimental group is divided into small heterogeneous groups, each assigned a specific aspect of quadratic equations. Students within the group collaboratively work on their assigned aspect, becoming experts in that area. Subsequently, they reassemble into new groups comprising one expert from each initial group, where they share their knowledge and learn from other experts. This collaborative learning process promotes active engagement, critical thinking, and problem-solving skills.

The control group follows the conventional instructional approach, which involves teacher-led lectures, textbook readings, and individual practice exercises. Both groups receive an equal amount of instructional time.

Data analysis involves comparing the pre-test and post-test scores of the experimental and control groups using appropriate statistical techniques. Additionally, qualitative data such as student feedback and observations are collected to gain insights into students’ perceptions and experiences with the interactive jigsaw teaching method.

The findings of this study are expected to contribute to the existing body of knowledge on effective teaching methodologies in mathematics education. It is anticipated that the interactive jigsaw teaching method will positively influence students’ academic achievement in quadratic equations, leading to improved understanding, problem-solving abilities, and overall performance.
