Abstract:
This study investigates the influence of school leadership styles on teachers’ performance in public secondary schools in Anambra State, Nigeria. Effective school leadership plays a crucial role in shaping the overall performance of teachers, which ultimately affects the quality of education provided to students. The study aims to identify the various leadership styles adopted by school leaders and their impact on teacher performance.

A mixed-methods approach was used, combining both quantitative and qualitative research methods. The sample consisted of teachers from various public secondary schools in Anambra State. A survey questionnaire was administered to collect quantitative data, while interviews and focus group discussions were conducted to obtain qualitative insights. The data were analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques and thematic analysis.

The findings of the study revealed that different leadership styles were prevalent among school leaders in Anambra State. These styles included transformational leadership, transactional leadership, and laissez-faire leadership. The majority of teachers expressed a preference for transformational leadership, highlighting its positive impact on their motivation, job satisfaction, and professional growth. Conversely, laissez-faire leadership was associated with lower levels of teacher performance and job satisfaction.

Furthermore, the study identified several factors that influenced the adoption of specific leadership styles. These factors included school culture, teacher characteristics, administrative support, and community involvement. The study recommended that school leaders should prioritize the development of transformational leadership skills to enhance teacher performance and create a conducive teaching and learning environment.

In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the influence of school leadership styles on teachers’ performance in public secondary schools in Anambra State, Nigeria. The findings underscore the importance of effective leadership in improving teacher performance and, consequently, the quality of education.
