PRINCIPALS’ IDEALISED INFLUENCE AND INSPIRATIONAL MOTIVATION AS CORRELATES OF TEACHERS’ COMMITMENT IN SECONDARY SCHOOLS IN ANAMBRA STATE.
Abstract:
This study explores the relationship between principals’ idealized influence and inspirational motivation on teachers’ commitment in secondary schools within Anambra State. The commitment of teachers is a crucial factor that affects overall educational quality and student outcomes. Understanding the factors that influence teachers’ commitment is essential for creating a conducive and productive learning environment.
The study employed a quantitative research design, utilizing a survey questionnaire to collect data from a sample of secondary school teachers in Anambra State. The questionnaire included items that measured principals’ idealized influence, inspirational motivation, and teachers’ commitment. Statistical analyses, including correlation and regression analyses, were conducted to examine the relationship between the variables.
The findings of the study revealed a positive and significant correlation between principals’ idealized influence and teachers’ commitment. This suggests that when principals exhibit idealized influence, which includes role modeling, setting high standards, and demonstrating ethical behavior, teachers are more likely to be committed to their profession and school. Similarly, inspirational motivation, which involves providing a compelling vision and encouraging teachers to achieve their full potential, was positively correlated with teachers’ commitment.
Furthermore, regression analysis indicated that both principals’ idealized influence and inspirational motivation significantly predicted teachers’ commitment. This implies that principals who demonstrate idealized influence and inspirational motivation have a greater impact on fostering teachers’ commitment within secondary schools.
The findings of this study have important implications for educational policymakers, school administrators, and principals in Anambra State. It highlights the significance of principals’ leadership behaviors in promoting teachers’ commitment, which ultimately contributes to improved educational outcomes. Therefore, it is recommended that principals invest in leadership development programs that enhance their idealized influence and inspirational motivation skills.
By focusing on these aspects of leadership, principals can create a positive school climate, enhance teacher satisfaction, and foster a sense of belonging and dedication among teachers. Further research could explore additional factors that influence teachers’ commitment and investigate the long-term effects of principals’ leadership behaviors on student achievement and school performance.
Keywords: principals’ idealized influence, inspirational motivation, teachers’ commitment, secondary schools, Anambra State.
