USING ARCHITECTURAL STRATEGIES IN CONSERVATION OF IGBO CATTLE (EHI IGBO): A CASE STUDY OF IGBARIAM, AWKA NORTH LGA, ANAMBRA STATE
Abstract:
This research focuses on the application of architectural strategies in the conservation of Igbo cattle, commonly known as Ehi Igbo, in the specific context of Igbariam, Awka North Local Government Area (LGA), Anambra State. The Igbo cattle breed is an important cultural and economic asset to the Igbo people of Nigeria, and its preservation is crucial for maintaining the region’s cultural heritage and ensuring sustainable agricultural practices.
The study aims to explore how architectural strategies can be employed to create sustainable and efficient cattle housing facilities that promote the welfare and productivity of Igbo cattle. It examines the existing challenges faced by traditional cattle rearing practices in Igbariam and proposes architectural interventions that address these challenges while respecting the cultural significance of the Igbo cattle.
The research methodology involves a comprehensive literature review, on-site observations, interviews with local cattle farmers, and engagement with architectural professionals. These methods will provide insights into the historical context, cultural importance, and current conservation practices related to Igbo cattle in Igbariam.
Based on the findings, the study proposes architectural strategies such as improved cattle housing design, ventilation systems, natural lighting, and waste management systems. These strategies aim to enhance the living conditions of the cattle, minimize disease transmission, optimize space utilization, and improve the overall efficiency of cattle rearing practices.
