Abstract:
This abstract presents a study on the passive control of energy in achieving sustainable architecture in public and institutional buildings through passive strategies in Anambra State, Nigeria. With the increasing demand for energy and the urgent need to mitigate the environmental impacts of buildings, adopting passive strategies has emerged as an effective approach to achieving sustainability goals. This study focuses on the specific context of Anambra State, Nigeria, where the climatic conditions and energy challenges necessitate innovative solutions for reducing energy consumption and promoting sustainable practices.
The objective of this study is to explore and evaluate the potential of passive strategies in the design and operation of public and institutional buildings in Anambra State. The research methodology involves a comprehensive literature review, analysis of climatic data, and case studies of existing buildings incorporating passive strategies. The study also considers the perspectives of architects, energy experts, and building occupants to assess the effectiveness and acceptance of passive strategies in the local context.
The passive strategies investigated include natural ventilation, daylighting, shading devices, thermal insulation, and thermal mass utilization. These strategies aim to optimize energy performance, minimize reliance on mechanical systems, and enhance occupant comfort. The study analyzes the energy savings, thermal comfort levels, and environmental benefits associated with the implementation of passive strategies in Anambra State.
The findings of this study contribute to the body of knowledge on sustainable architecture and provide valuable insights for architects, engineers, policymakers, and building owners in Anambra State. The research outcomes will inform the development of guidelines and recommendations for integrating passive strategies into the design, construction, and retrofitting of public and institutional buildings. Ultimately, this research strives to promote energy efficiency, reduce greenhouse gas emissions, and foster sustainable development in Anambra State’s built environment.
