EARLY INTERVENTION PROGRAMS FOR CHILDREN WITH AUTISM SPECTRUM DISORDER IN NIGERIA: A CASE STUDY.
ABSTRACT
This case study investigates the development, implementation, and outcomes of early intervention programs designed to support children with Autism Spectrum Disorder (ASD) in Nigeria. Recognizing the global prevalence of ASD diagnoses and the critical importance of early support, this research examines the specific strategies and practices employed to provide timely and effective interventions for children with ASD in the Nigerian context. A mixed-methods research design, incorporating surveys, interviews, and program assessments, was utilized to collect comprehensive data from a purposively selected sample of early intervention programs across diverse regions in Nigeria. The study focuses on the experiences of children with ASD, their parents, early interventionists, and program coordinators, with an emphasis on the effectiveness of early interventions in promoting developmental progress and enhancing overall well-being, the impact of early intervention programs on the developmental trajectories of children with ASD. Benefits include improved communication skills, enhanced social interactions, and increased readiness for inclusive educational settings. Key components of successful early intervention programs include individualized and play-based approaches, family involvement, and a culturally sensitive curriculum. this case study offers practical insights and recommendations to strengthen early intervention programs for children with ASD in Nigeria. These recommendations encompass targeted training programs for interventionists, increased resource allocation, and community engagement initiatives. Furthermore, the study underscores the importance of fostering a culture of inclusivity and understanding towards children with ASD within the broader community.
