ABSTRACT

This case study investigates the implementation and impact of Gifted and Talented Education (GATE) programs tailored for economically disadvantaged students in Nigerian schools. Recognizing the importance of equitable access to enriched educational opportunities, this research employs a mixed-methods approach, incorporating interviews, surveys, and academic assessments. The study encompasses a diverse sample of students from economically disadvantaged backgrounds across various educational settings in Nigeria. Findings underscore the transformative potential of GATE programs in nurturing the talents and abilities of economically disadvantaged students. These programs, characterized by specialized curricula, enrichment activities, and mentorship, facilitate enhanced cognitive development, critical thinking skills, and creativity among participating students. The study also highlights the significance of dedicated educators and mentors in providing tailored support and guidance. the research identifies challenges in the implementation of GATE programs, including limited financial resources, the need for specialized training for educators, and considerations for identifying giftedness within diverse cultural and socio-economic contexts. Additionally, community perceptions and awareness surrounding gifted education may impact the acceptance and participation of economically disadvantaged students in GATE initiatives. this case study holds significant implications for educational policy and practice in Nigeria. Recommendations are provided for the expansion and enhancement of GATE programs, emphasizing increased investment in professional development, targeted identification strategies, and community outreach initiatives to promote understanding and support for gifted education. This research contributes to the broader discourse on educational equity and the empowerment of economically disadvantaged students. By showcasing the effectiveness of tailored GATE programs within the Nigerian context, this study advocates for the widespread adoption and integration of enriched educational opportunities to unlock the potential of gifted learners from diverse socio-economic backgrounds.
