MAJOR REPRODUCTIVE HEALTH PROBLEMS, SERVICE PREFERENCE AND UTILIZATION AMONG HIGH SCHOOL ADOLESCENT GIRL STUDENTS IN UYO, AKWA IBOM STATE, NIGERIA
Abstract:
This study aims to explore the major reproductive health problems encountered by high school adolescent girl students in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria, and their preferences and utilization of reproductive health services. The reproductive health of adolescent girls is a critical public health concern, as they face unique challenges and vulnerabilities during this transitional phase of their lives.
The research adopts a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews. A sample of high school adolescent girl students in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State, will be recruited for the study. The quantitative survey will collect data on the prevalence and types of reproductive health problems experienced by the participants, as well as their knowledge and utilization of reproductive health services. The qualitative interviews will provide in-depth insights into their perceptions, preferences, and barriers to accessing reproductive health services.
The findings of this study will contribute to a better understanding of the reproductive health needs of high school adolescent girl students in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. By identifying the major reproductive health problems they face, policymakers, healthcare providers, and educators can develop targeted interventions and programs to address these issues effectively. Additionally, understanding the preferences and utilization patterns of reproductive health services will help in designing accessible and youth-friendly services that meet the specific needs of this population.
The study expects to reveal the prevalence of reproductive health problems such as menstrual disorders, sexually transmitted infections, unintended pregnancies, and inadequate knowledge about contraception among high school adolescent girl students. It will also shed light on their preferences for reproductive health services, including the choice between formal healthcare providers, community-based organizations, or school-based programs. Moreover, the study will identify barriers, such as stigma, lack of information, and cultural norms, that hinder the utilization of reproductive health services.
The results of this study will provide evidence-based recommendations for policymakers, healthcare practitioners, and educators to develop comprehensive reproductive health programs tailored to the needs of high school adolescent girl students in Uyo, Akwa Ibom State. It will contribute to the improvement of reproductive health outcomes and ultimately empower adolescent girls to make informed decisions about their sexual and reproductive health, leading to healthier lives and improved overall well-being.
