Abstract:
Cooperative learning is a widely recognized instructional approach that fosters collaborative interactions among students to promote academic achievement. This study aims to investigate the impact of cooperative learning on the academic achievement of public secondary school students in the Ogidi Education Zone of Anambra State, Nigeria.
The research employed a quantitative research design, and data was collected through surveys and academic performance records. A sample of students from public secondary schools in the Ogidi Education Zone was selected using a stratified random sampling technique. The sample consisted of both experimental and control groups.
The experimental group received instruction using cooperative learning methods, while the control group received traditional teacher-centered instruction. Academic achievement was measured using students’ scores in pre- and post-tests, as well as their cumulative grade point averages (CGPA).
The findings of the study revealed a significant positive impact of cooperative learning on the academic achievement of public secondary school students. The experimental group showed higher mean scores in both the post-test and CGPA compared to the control group. This suggests that cooperative learning methods have the potential to improve student learning outcomes and enhance academic achievement.
Furthermore, the study examined the perceived benefits and challenges of implementing cooperative learning in the classroom. The results indicated that students in the experimental group reported enhanced engagement, improved communication and collaboration skills, and greater motivation to learn. However, some challenges, such as time constraints and the need for teacher training, were identified.
The implications of the study highlight the importance of incorporating cooperative learning methods in the curriculum of public secondary schools. It emphasizes the need for teacher professional development programs to equip educators with the necessary skills and knowledge to effectively implement cooperative learning strategies. Additionally, policymakers should consider the integration of cooperative learning as a pedagogical approach to enhance the overall quality of education in Anambra State, Nigeria.
In conclusion, this study provides empirical evidence supporting the positive impact of cooperative learning on the academic achievement of public secondary school students in the Ogidi Education Zone of Anambra State, Nigeria. The findings underscore the potential of cooperative learning as an effective instructional method that promotes student engagement, collaboration, and academic success.
