Abstract:
Breast cancer is a significant health concern globally, and early detection through self-breast examination (SBE) plays a crucial role in improving survival rates. This study aimed to assess the knowledge of breast cancer and the practice of SBE among female undergraduates in Akwa Ibom State University. Additionally, it explored strategies for enhancing the practice of SBE among this population.
A descriptive cross-sectional study design was employed, and data were collected using a structured questionnaire. A total of 300 female undergraduate students were randomly selected as participants. The questionnaire assessed participants’ knowledge of breast cancer risk factors, signs, and symptoms, as well as their understanding and practice of SBE. Furthermore, participants were asked about their awareness of strategies for enhancing SBE practice.
The results revealed that while a majority of the participants (78.6%) had heard of breast cancer, their knowledge regarding risk factors, signs, and symptoms was inadequate. Only a small proportion (32.1%) demonstrated a good understanding of SBE, and even fewer (18.9%) reported practicing it regularly. Lack of awareness (45.7%) and uncertainty about the correct technique (28.6%) were identified as significant barriers to SBE practice.
Regarding enhancement strategies, the study found that a majority of participants (68.3%) were unaware of available resources for learning about SBE techniques. However, they expressed interest in various strategies for enhancing their knowledge and practice, including educational campaigns (79.4%), workshops or training sessions (67.8%), and the provision of educational materials (54.2%).
This study highlights the limited knowledge of breast cancer and the low practice of SBE among female undergraduates in Akwa Ibom State University. It emphasizes the need for targeted interventions to enhance breast cancer awareness and SBE practices among this population. The study suggests implementing educational campaigns, workshops, and the provision of educational materials as effective strategies for promoting knowledge and practice of SBE among female undergraduates. These findings can guide policymakers, educators, and healthcare providers in developing comprehensive breast cancer prevention programs tailored to the unique needs of this population.
