Abstract:
Geography education plays a vital role in developing students’ spatial understanding and critical thinking skills. However, many senior secondary school students struggle with the subject due to various factors such as lack of motivation and disinterest. This abstract highlights the importance of implementing motivational strategies to enhance the learning experience and improve students’ performance in geography within the Nnewi Education Zone.
This study aims to identify effective motivational strategies that can be employed by educators to engage senior secondary school students in geography learning. The research will utilize a mixed-methods approach, combining quantitative surveys and qualitative interviews to gather data from a sample of senior secondary school students in the Nnewi Education Zone.
The data collected will be analyzed using statistical techniques such as descriptive statistics, correlation analysis, and thematic analysis. The study will explore the relationship between motivation and academic performance in geography, examining the factors that influence students’ motivation levels and identifying the most effective strategies for enhancing motivation and engagement.
Potential motivational strategies to be investigated include incorporating real-world examples and case studies, using technology and multimedia resources, promoting collaborative learning, providing timely feedback, and recognizing students’ achievements. Additionally, the study will examine the role of teachers’ instructional practices and classroom environment in fostering motivation and interest in geography.
The findings of this study will contribute to the existing literature on motivational strategies in geography education and provide practical recommendations for educators in the Nnewi Education Zone and similar contexts. By implementing effective motivational strategies, educators can create a positive learning environment that stimulates students’ interest, enhances their understanding of geography concepts, and ultimately improves their academic performance.
