COUNSELORS NIGERIAN COLLEGE STUDENTS’ ATTITUDES ABOUT LOVE, MARRIAGE AND SEXUAL RELATIONS: IMPLICATIONS FOR FAMILY  

Abstract:

This study aims to explore the attitudes of Nigerian college students regarding love, marriage, and sexual relations, and its implications for family dynamics. The purpose of this research is to shed light on the evolving perceptions and beliefs held by this particular demographic, as well as the potential impact these attitudes may have on future family structures and relationships.

The study employs a qualitative research design, utilizing in-depth interviews and focus group discussions to gather data from a diverse sample of Nigerian college students. Participants are selected from various universities across the country, ensuring representation from different cultural, ethnic, and religious backgrounds. Thematic analysis is employed to identify common themes and patterns emerging from the data.

Preliminary findings indicate that Nigerian college students’ attitudes about love, marriage, and sexual relations are influenced by a variety of factors, including cultural traditions, religious beliefs, peer influence, and exposure to Western media. While some participants express traditional views, emphasizing the importance of arranged marriages and conservative sexual values, others demonstrate more liberal perspectives, emphasizing personal choice, romantic love, and gender equality in relationships.

Moreover, the study reveals that these evolving attitudes have significant implications for family dynamics in Nigerian society. Changing perceptions about love, marriage, and sexual relations may challenge traditional family structures, roles, and expectations. This shift may result in increased emphasis on individual happiness, autonomy, and personal fulfillment within relationships, potentially leading to changes in family formation, marital satisfaction, and intergenerational relationships.

The implications of this research are relevant to counselors and practitioners working with Nigerian college students, as it highlights the need for culturally sensitive and competent interventions. Understanding the range of attitudes and beliefs held by this population can inform the development of counseling strategies that promote healthy relationships, effective communication, and the negotiation of cultural and generational differences.

In conclusion, this study provides valuable insights into the attitudes of Nigerian college students regarding love, marriage, and sexual relations. The findings underscore the importance of addressing evolving beliefs and values in the context of family counseling and support services. By recognizing the diverse perspectives held by this population, counselors can better assist Nigerian college students in navigating their relationships and making informed decisions that align with their individual and cultural contexts.
