Abstract:
This abstract provides an overview of a study conducted on the relationship between social activities and manifest anxiety among freshmen in tertiary institutions in Lagos State. The purpose of the study was to examine how engagement in social activities influences the levels of manifest anxiety experienced by freshmen students in tertiary institutions.

The study utilized a quantitative research design, employing a questionnaire as the primary data collection instrument. A sample of freshmen students from multiple tertiary institutions in Lagos State was selected using a convenient sampling technique. The questionnaire consisted of two sections: the first section focused on demographic information, while the second section contained items related to social activities and manifest anxiety.

The findings of the study revealed a significant relationship between social activities and manifest anxiety among freshmen students. The results indicated that freshmen who actively participated in social activities reported lower levels of manifest anxiety compared to those who were less engaged. The study also found that certain types of social activities, such as joining clubs or organizations, participating in sports, and attending social events, were particularly associated with reduced levels of manifest anxiety.

The implications of these findings suggest that promoting and facilitating social activities among freshmen students in tertiary institutions can potentially contribute to their overall well-being and mental health. By encouraging participation in social activities, institutions can create an environment that fosters social integration, peer support, and a sense of belonging, which may help alleviate anxiety symptoms among freshmen.

Based on the study’s findings, it is recommended that tertiary institutions in Lagos State implement initiatives to promote and support social activities among freshmen students. This may include organizing orientation programs, establishing student clubs and organizations, and hosting social events specifically tailored to facilitate social interaction and engagement. Further research is also recommended to explore additional factors that may contribute to manifest anxiety among freshmen students and to evaluate the long-term effects of social activity interventions on their mental health.
