Abstract:
This study aims to assess the impact of the Subsidy Reinvestment and Empowerment Programme (SURE-P) on the socio-economic development of Edo State, Nigeria. SURE-P was introduced by the Nigerian government as a measure to reinvest funds saved from fuel subsidy removal into critical sectors such as transportation, education, health, and job creation. The effectiveness of SURE-P in achieving its objectives and fostering socio-economic development in Edo State is evaluated through a comprehensive appraisal.

The research methodology involves a combination of quantitative and qualitative approaches. Primary data is collected through structured interviews, surveys, and focus group discussions with beneficiaries of SURE-P programs, government officials, and community leaders. Secondary data is sourced from government reports, academic literature, and relevant publications. The collected data is analyzed using descriptive statistics, thematic analysis, and econometric techniques.

The study investigates the extent to which SURE-P interventions have contributed to the development of critical sectors in Edo State. It assesses the impact of SURE-P initiatives on employment generation, poverty reduction, healthcare provision, educational infrastructure, and transportation services. Additionally, the study examines the challenges and constraints encountered in the implementation of SURE-P programs and identifies potential areas for improvement.

Preliminary findings indicate that SURE-P has made significant contributions to the socio-economic development of Edo State. The program has facilitated job creation through the establishment of vocational training centers and the provision of employment opportunities in various sectors. It has also enhanced access to quality healthcare services through the construction and renovation of health facilities. Furthermore, SURE-P interventions have improved educational infrastructure and increased access to education for marginalized communities. However, challenges such as inadequate funding, corruption, and poor coordination have hampered the full realization of the program’s potential impact.

The study concludes with policy recommendations to enhance the effectiveness and sustainability of SURE-P programs in Edo State. These recommendations include improved coordination and monitoring mechanisms, increased budgetary allocations, capacity building for stakeholders, and the promotion of transparency and accountability in program implementation.
