Abstract:
This study examines the impact of peer grouping on juvenile delinquent behaviors in Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria. Juvenile delinquency is a significant social issue that can have adverse consequences on individuals, families, and society as a whole. Understanding the factors contributing to juvenile delinquency is crucial for developing effective prevention and intervention strategies.

The study adopts a quantitative research design, utilizing a survey questionnaire to collect data from a sample of juveniles residing in Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area. The questionnaire includes measures of peer-grouping patterns, delinquent behaviors, and demographic information. A stratified random sampling technique is employed to ensure the representativeness of the sample.

The findings of the study reveal a significant correlation between peer-grouping and juvenile delinquent behaviors. The analysis demonstrates that juveniles who associate with delinquent peer groups are more likely to engage in delinquent behaviors themselves. Furthermore, the study identifies specific factors within peer-group settings that contribute to delinquency, such as peer pressure, exposure to criminal activities, and the normalization of deviant behaviors.

The study also examines the role of family dynamics and socio-economic factors as potential mediators or moderators of the relationship between peer-grouping and delinquency. The results suggest that a supportive family environment and access to positive social resources can mitigate the negative influence of deviant peer groups.

Based on the findings, this study highlights the importance of targeted interventions aimed at reducing the impact of negative peer-group influences on juvenile delinquency. Effective prevention strategies should focus on promoting positive peer relationships, strengthening family support systems, and providing opportunities for skill development and social integration.

In conclusion, this research contributes to the understanding of the relationship between peer-grouping and juvenile delinquent behaviors in Ajeromi Ifelodun Local Government Area of Lagos State, Nigeria. The findings underscore the need for comprehensive and multi-dimensional approaches to address the underlying factors contributing to delinquency and promote positive youth development in the community.
