Abstract:
Computer networks play a crucial role in today’s interconnected world, and it is essential for students to develop a solid understanding of network topologies and acquire relevant skills in this domain. This study investigates the effect of using the Cisco Packet Tracer simulator on senior school students’ comprehension and skill acquisition in computer network topology in Nigeria.
The research employed a quantitative experimental design, utilizing a pre-test and post-test approach with a control group. The participants consisted of senior school students from selected schools in Nigeria. The experimental group received instruction on computer network topology using the Cisco Packet Tracer simulator, while the control group received traditional instruction without the simulator.
The study assessed the students’ comprehension of network topologies and their skill acquisition through a post-test examination. Additionally, participants’ perception of the Cisco Packet Tracer simulator was evaluated through a post-intervention questionnaire. Data analysis techniques, including t-tests and descriptive statistics, were employed to analyze the results.
The findings of the study indicated that senior school students who used the Cisco Packet Tracer simulator demonstrated significantly higher levels of comprehension and skill acquisition in computer network topology compared to those who received traditional instruction. The simulator provided a visual and interactive learning environment, allowing students to explore network configurations, troubleshoot issues, and gain hands-on experience.
Furthermore, the participants’ perception of the Cisco Packet Tracer simulator was overwhelmingly positive. Students reported that the simulator enhanced their understanding of network concepts, improved their problem-solving skills, and increased their motivation and engagement in the learning process.
This research highlights the effectiveness of integrating the Cisco Packet Tracer simulator into the curriculum for teaching computer network topology in senior schools in Nigeria. The simulator serves as a valuable tool for promoting active learning, fostering practical skills development, and preparing students for future careers in information technology.
