Abstract:
This study aims to investigate the impact of Virtual Chemistry Lab Software (VCLS) and gender on the acquisition of practical skills in acid-base titration among secondary school students. Acid-base titration is an essential experimental technique in chemistry education, and leveraging virtual lab environments can provide students with opportunities to practice and enhance their practical skills.
The study employed a mixed-methods research design, including quantitative data collection through pre- and post-tests and qualitative data collection through interviews and observations. The participants in this study consisted of secondary school students from diverse backgrounds and genders.
The experimental group utilized the VCLS, while the control group engaged in traditional hands-on laboratory activities. The practical skills acquisition was assessed through performance in acid-base titration experiments, including accuracy, precision, and overall competence. Additionally, the influence of gender on practical skill acquisition was analyzed to determine any significant differences or disparities.
The findings of the study indicated that the use of VCLS significantly enhanced the acquisition of practical skills in acid-base titration among secondary school students. The experimental group demonstrated improved accuracy, precision, and overall competence in conducting acid-base titration experiments compared to the control group. The virtual lab environment provided students with a platform to practice the techniques repeatedly, enhancing their familiarity and proficiency.
Furthermore, the study found that gender had no significant impact on the acquisition of practical skills in acid-base titration. Both male and female students exhibited similar levels of improvement in their performance, suggesting that virtual lab software can provide an equitable learning experience for students regardless of their gender.
These findings have implications for chemistry education, highlighting the benefits of incorporating VCLS into secondary school curricula to enhance practical skill acquisition. By providing students with virtual lab experiences, educators can supplement traditional hands-on laboratory activities and ensure that all students, irrespective of gender, have equal opportunities to develop their practical skills in acid-base titration.
