Abstract:
This study investigates the effects of enhanced inquiry and 5E model instructional strategies on students’ achievement in senior secondary school biology. The objective of this research is to explore how these instructional approaches impact students’ learning outcomes in the subject.

The study employs a quasi-experimental design with a pretest-posttest control group. The participants consist of senior secondary school students who are studying biology. The research is conducted in a selected number of schools, and the participants are randomly assigned to two groups: an experimental group and a control group.

The experimental group receives instruction using enhanced inquiry and 5E model strategies, while the control group receives traditional instruction. The enhanced inquiry approach emphasizes student-centered learning, where students actively engage in scientific inquiry, posing questions, designing experiments, and analyzing data. The 5E model instructional strategy follows a five-step sequence: Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate, providing a structured framework for teaching and learning.

Both groups are assessed using a pretest before the intervention and a posttest after the instructional period. The assessment includes questions that target the cognitive domain of Bloom’s taxonomy, measuring students’ knowledge, comprehension, application, analysis, synthesis, and evaluation skills.

The data collected from the pretest and posttest are analyzed using appropriate statistical techniques, including t-tests and analysis of covariance (ANCOVA), to compare the achievement scores of the experimental and control groups.

The findings of this study will contribute to the existing body of knowledge on effective instructional strategies in biology education. It is expected that the enhanced inquiry and 5E model instructional strategies will positively impact students’ achievement in senior secondary school biology. The results may provide evidence for the implementation of these strategies in biology classrooms, promoting active learning, critical thinking, and improved understanding of biological concepts.
