Abstract:
This study examines the impact of the Learning-Together model of cooperative learning on the performance and retention of upper basic science students in Kabba Metropolis. Cooperative learning is a teaching approach that encourages students to work together in small groups to achieve common goals. The Learning-Together model emphasizes collaboration, active participation, and shared responsibility among students.

The study employed a quasi-experimental design, with two groups of upper basic science students: an experimental group that received instruction using the Learning-Together model and a control group that received traditional teacher-centered instruction. The participants were selected from schools in Kabba Metropolis using a purposive sampling technique. The sample consisted of a total of 100 students, with 50 students in each group.

The performance of the students was assessed using pre- and post-tests, which covered the key concepts taught during the study period. Additionally, retention tests were administered after a certain period to determine the long-term impact of the Learning-Together model on student knowledge retention.

The data collected were analyzed using descriptive and inferential statistics. The results revealed that students in the experimental group who received instruction using the Learning-Together model showed significantly higher performance on the post-test compared to the control group. Furthermore, the retention tests indicated that students in the experimental group had better long-term knowledge retention than those in the control group.

The findings suggest that the Learning-Together model of cooperative learning has a positive impact on the performance and retention of upper basic science students in Kabba Metropolis. This approach promotes active engagement, meaningful interactions, and a sense of shared responsibility among students, leading to improved academic outcomes.

The implications of this study are significant for educators, policymakers, and curriculum developers. The integration of cooperative learning strategies, such as the Learning-Together model, into science education can enhance student learning and retention. It is recommended that further research be conducted to explore the generalizability and sustainability of these findings across different contexts and subjects.
