ABSTRACT

This research project explores the e-business competencies required by business education students to effectively address the current challenges associated with managing small-scale businesses in Delta State, Nigeria. The study aims to identify the specific digital skills and knowledge areas that business education students need to develop in order to overcome the challenges faced by small-scale business owners in the digital era.

A mixed-methods research design will be employed, combining surveys and interviews with business education students, small-scale business owners, and industry experts. The research objectives include identifying the current challenges faced by small-scale businesses in Delta State in the context of e-business, exploring the e-business competencies deemed crucial for mitigating these challenges, and assessing the perceptions of stakeholders regarding the preparedness of business education students in acquiring these competencies.

The findings of this research project will contribute to the existing body of knowledge by providing insights into the e-business competencies required by business education students to address the challenges faced by small-scale businesses in Delta State. The research will identify the specific challenges encountered by small-scale business owners in the digital landscape, such as limited online presence, lack of digital marketing strategies, cybersecurity threats, e-commerce logistics, and customer relationship management in the virtual environment. Additionally, the research will highlight the e-business competencies that are essential for mitigating these challenges, including digital marketing, e-commerce platforms and technologies, data analytics, cybersecurity, and customer relationship management in the digital realm. Furthermore, the research will assess the perceptions of stakeholders regarding the preparedness of business education students in acquiring these e-business competencies, examining the alignment between the business education curriculum and the digital needs of small-scale business owners.

The implications of this research extend to business education institutions, policymakers, small-scale business owners, and aspiring entrepreneurs in Delta State, Nigeria. The findings will inform business education institutions about the specific e-business competencies that need to be incorporated into the curriculum to enhance the preparedness of students for managing small-scale businesses in the digital era.
