Abstract:
Pre-marital sex among female students is a complex and sensitive issue that has gained significant attention due to its potential consequences on individuals and society. This study focuses on exploring the causes and consequences of pre-marital sex among female students of Oke-Ogun Polytechnic in Oyo State, Nigeria.

The research employs a mixed-methods approach, combining both quantitative and qualitative data collection methods. The sample consists of female students from various departments and levels of study within the polytechnic. The quantitative data is gathered through a structured questionnaire, while the qualitative data is collected through interviews and focus group discussions.

The findings reveal several causes of pre-marital sex among female students. Factors such as peer pressure, curiosity, media influence, lack of comprehensive sexual education, and inadequate parental guidance emerge as significant contributors. Additionally, societal norms, economic factors, and cultural practices also play a role in influencing pre-marital sexual behavior.

The consequences of pre-marital sex are diverse and multifaceted. The study highlights the potential risks of unplanned pregnancies, sexually transmitted infections (STIs), emotional distress, stigmatization, academic decline, and damaged reputations. Furthermore, the research explores the impact of pre-marital sex on the overall well-being and long-term goals of the female students.

Based on the study’s findings, recommendations are provided to address the issue effectively. These include the implementation of comprehensive sexual education programs, promotion of open communication between parents and children, strengthening of institutional support systems, and the provision of accessible reproductive health services on campus. Additionally, community engagement and awareness campaigns are suggested to challenge societal norms and reduce stigma surrounding pre-marital sex.

In conclusion, this study sheds light on the causes and consequences of pre-marital sex among female students in Oke-Ogun Polytechnic. By understanding the underlying factors and consequences, policymakers, educational institutions, and families can develop targeted interventions and support mechanisms to mitigate the negative effects and promote responsible sexual behavior among young women.
